Asigra (with NetApp) & Axcient Arming MSPs in New Ways

Backup in “the cloud” via a service, or some combination of on- and off-premises technology, is gaining ground.  Asigra has long been the “arms supplier” to managed service providers (MSPs) who want to offer online backup and recovery services.  To date, it’s been up to the MSP to assemble the technology that the service is based on—not an undertaking that all prefer.

NetApp will partner with Asigra to enable an integrated hardware-software solution for MSPs.  Asigra’s MSPs now have a scalable, interoperable hardware-software combination to deliver backup software as a service (SaaS) or a hybrid solution, minimizing deployment time.  A partnership with a technology leader such as NetApp really boosts Asigra’s presence and opens up new channel opportunities.

NetApp is pushing new service-based consumption models—a new twist for many NetApp partners.  NetApp’s goal is to arm service providers, many of whom will be the big consumers of storage as sales to end-users are displaced by end-users’ use of service providers’ “as-a-service” offerings.   A partnership with MSP channel-centric Asigra provides new channel opportunities for NetApp and participation in commercial-grade, highly available infrastructure for backup services (especially versus EMC, which doesn’t seem to know what to do with Decho Mozy  … er, I mean EMC Mozy … uh, what is it this week?).

Axcient, the upstart provider of a hybrid backup solution, has a different take than Asigra.  Axcient is an end-to-end solution, delivering its own on-site appliance for local backup and recovery paired with cloud storage at one of Axcient’s SAS 70 Type II data centers for disaster recovery.  Axcient recruits MSPs to resell its hybrid service—eliminating the need for its MSPs to establish their own data centers.

This week, Axcient announced its Server Alive service—the ability for an on-premises Axcient appliance to act as a failover server should a client’s physical or virtual machine suffer an outage.  Server Alive extends the availability of servers/applications for end-users by allowing administrators to locally or remotely recover a failed server on an Axcient appliance.

The moves from Asigra and Axcient are enabling service providers—and end-users—to better protect critical information.
